PURE showcases pan-European digital radio

by

London, UK, 7th September 2009: PURE – the world's leading manufacturer of DAB digital radios – is demonstrating the first commercially available DMB-R radio, at IFA in Berlin (September 4th-9th 2009).

PURE's globally compatible digital radios already support DAB and DAB+, and the addition of DMB-R make the radios fully compatible with the first European Digital Radio Receiver Profile as defined in 2008 by WorldDMB* and DIGITALEUROPE. This is aligned with the expected launch of DMB-R services in France in December 2009. Countries that are already committed to the new Digital Radio Receiver Profiles include Australia, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Malta, Norway, Switzerland and the UK. Many more are planning to announce their commitment in the near future.

Says Paul Smith, general manager of PURE: "We have led the way with the widest range of globally compatible digital radios, and now the addition of DMB-R for the French broadcast system effectively makes global digital radio a reality."

Nineteen PURE radios will be on display that can meet the recently announced Digital Radio Receiver Profiles defined by WorldDMB and the EBU†. Digital radios that conform to these profiles will work in any country using the WorldDMB Family of Standards†† including DAB, DAB+ and DMB-R. The nineteen compatible PURE radios on show at IFA cover use in every room of the house, the garden, out and about, and the car. Editor's Notes:
*In September 2008, WorldDMB (international organisation for promoting DAB - Digital Audio Broadcasting, DAB+ and DMB - Digital Multimedia Broadcasting) and EBU (European Broadcasting Union) announced a new set of standards entitled the WorldDMB Digital Radio Receiver Profiles. These standards will ensure the interoperability of all new digital radio receivers across countries whose broadcasters are using either DAB, DAB+ or DMB. Together these are known as the Eureka 147 Family of Standards. The manufacturing specifications comprise three Digital Radio Receiver Profiles: the Standard Radio Receiver (Profile 1) expected to drive the price-sensitive mass market for radio devices; the Rich Media Radio Receiver (Profile 2) for table-top radios with colour screens able receive audio, advanced text and picture applications; the Multimedia Receiver (Profile 3) for devices such as mobile phones, personal media players, able to receive advanced forms of multimedia including mobile video.
