VideoLogic Launches 2D/3D Accelerator for PC Gamers - GrafixStar 450

VideoLogic, the international desktop multimedia company, has today launched its first 2D/3D graphics accelerator for the Windows 95 and gaming communities - the GrafixStar 450. Based on the S3 ViRGE 64-bit graphics and video controller, the GrafixStar 450 delivers high performance 2D graphics, 3D acceleration and MPEG-1 digital video playback at very low cost. The GrafixStar 450 is available now from VideoLogic's existing network of distributors and resellers

VideoLogic is supporting two versions of the GrafixStar 450 - a full retail pack version and an OEM option. The retail GrafixStar 450 comes with 2 MB of high performance, 35ns DRAM on-board upgradable to 4 MB, a special S3D games pack of Havoc, Actua Soccer (the final four version) and Terminal Velocity (partial version only), as well as Normality from Gremlin. The retail GrafixStar 450 has an RRP of £99.00, with an estimated street price of £85.00.

The bulk pack OEM version of the GrafixStar 450 comes with 2 MB of 45ns DRAM on board, upgradable to 4 MB and a special S3D games pack, including Havoc, Actua Soccer (the final four version) and Terminal Velocity (partial version only). This version of the GrafixStar 450 has an estimated street price of £65.00, and will be available to OEMs and through the reseller channel to customers interested predominantly in the GrafixStar 450 hardware. A bulk OEM version with 35ns memory will also be available to system integrators if required.

The GrafixStar 450 is a Windows 95 Plug and Play PCI accelerator card, comes with built-in video acceleration and supports up to 16.7 million colours, resolutions of 1600 x 1200, and a maximum refresh rate of 150Hz.

In addition, the ViRGE processor on the GrafixStar 450 delivers acceleration for all main 3D features, including: flat and Gouraud shading, perspective correction, texture filtering, MIP mapping, depth cueing, fogging, alpha blending, video texture mapping and Z-buffering.GrafixMAX, S3D and D3D Drivers

VideoLogic has developed accelerated software drivers for the GrafixStar 450 using its custom designed GrafixMAX technology, producing a significant graphics performance advantage over other ViRGE based graphics cards. Both the retail and OEM versions of the GrafixStar 450 also come with S3D and Microsoft Direct3D drivers compliant to Direct X 3.0.

Free Prolab Software Bundle

As part of the GrafixStar 450 customer pack, VideoLogic is also bundling £200 of Prolab multimedia software, free of charge. The Prolab software package consists of three software titles - Image Folio, VideoWork and MediaScope.

  • ImageFolio is a multimedia image processing application that allows you to edit, re-shape and colour images, with full twain capability for scanner interface.
  • VideoWork is a video capturing, editing and playback application that can manipulate and compress multiple video formats. Using over 150 transition effects and a wide range of video and audio special effects, VideoWork produces professional customised video on your PC.
  • MediaScope is a three-in-one on-screen multimedia CD player that gives the PC user an easy to use and visual interface for playing Media CDs, Music CDs and MPEG CDs.

    VideoLogic has also developed a suite of Smart utilities for use with the GrafixStar 450 under Windows '95, including SmartDesktop and SmartDisplay: SmartDesktop is an enhanced virtual desktop manager, enabling resolution switching on the fly; SmartDisplay, a graphics display Wizard to help users make the most suitable install and set up decisions for their graphics subsystems.

    VideoLogic Support

    The GrafixStar 450 is supplied with software drivers for Windows 3.11, Windows 95, and IBM OS/2. The card is backed by a five year warranty, with 24-hour on-line Internet, CompuServe and Bulletin Board support.
