PURE, RSPB, Fun Kids and Reading for Life launch WildVerse poetry competition

London, UK 17th August 2010: PURE, the world-leading radio maker has teamed up with RSPB Wildlife Explorers, Fun Kids - the Sony Radio Academy Award winning radio station, and Reading for Life, to launch the WildVerse poetry competition.

Children and young people ‘aged up to 19’ are invited to submit their ‘wild poems’ which can be about a bug, a bird, a tree or any kind of wildlife, and the winning entries will be read out on Fun Kids between the 18th and 31st of October 2010. The competition is open to RSPB Wildlife Explorers and any young people who are inspired to write about the outdoors. The main winner will also win a PURE Sensia internet-connected digital radio with colour touchscreen, and the four runners up will receive a PURE EVOKE Flow internet-connected digital radio so they can listen to their poems being read out on Fun Kids.

The competition will be judged by Anthony Browne, the current Children’s Laureate, Mark Boyd, RSPB youth manager and Jack Sallabank from Reading for Life who recommend that listening and interacting to the radio can help develop children’s speaking and listening skills.

More information on the competition along with some speaking and listening tips supplied by Reading for Life can be found at www.pure.com/wildverse

Jack Sallabank of Reading for Life says: ”Speaking and listening skills are essential for children’s future success and will also support the development of reading and writing skills. Children who can listen with growing attention, will be better able to understand and communicate with others.  Parents can boost listening skills by engaging and interacting with their children, both through conversation and also by listening and reacting together to radio programmes such as WildVerse on Fun Kids and other audio content.”

Mark Boyd, RSPB youth manager says: “By asking children to write poetry about the natural world gets them to observe it closely and respond to it on an emotional level. The WildVerse poetry competition is a great way of inspiring young people to connect with nature. The chance to hear their poem read out on radio and printed in our BirdLife magazine is a wonderful opportunity. What better way to show children care about nature than writing poems about it”.

Gregory Watson, managing director of Fun Kids says: “The WildVerse poetry competition not only inspires children to create their own poems, but also provides a unique opportunity to have their poems broadcast on the radio.  WildVerse, as well as producing content that will appeal to children of all ages, will encourage children to engage them with nature and possibly inspiring them to become RSPB Wildlife Explorers themselves or even a future radio star.”

Colin Crawford, PURE's director of marketing says: "PURE is a keen supporter of the RSPB as well as any activity that encourages children to listen to the radio and we warmly welcome more child-centric radio content of which Fun Kids is a brilliant example."
