#PureMustListen tracks: November 2017

Crikey, it’s November already! But even as we reach the tail end of 2017, there’s still plenty of music releases to get excited about before the year is through. This month, we’ve got the return of a rap godfather, Scandinavia’s hottest new pop sensation and plenty more to sink your teeth into. Read on to discover your favourite new jam.

Eminem ft. Beyoncé - Walk On Water

Eminem left fans across the world itching for more after dropping a scathing freestyle rap aimed at Donald Trump back in October. Now, he’s finally granted millions of wishes with the surprise drop of a comeback single. Oh, and he’s also casually enlisted the help of pop royalty, Beyoncé. No biggie.

While the song’s piano-led backing track may be pretty low-key, this one’s all about the lyrics. The Detroit rapper spits reflective rhymes tackling issues such as fame and depression, while Bey’s sumptuous vocals acts as the perfect respite between each soul-bearing verse.

Walk On Water is a very welcome reminder of the rapper’s lyrical finesse, but now we can’t wait to hear what Slim Shady has planned next.

Elbow - Golden Slumbers

Following a now sacred Christmas tradition, John Lewis have linked up with the lovely chaps from Elbow and tasked them with covering a well-known hit to soundtrack their annual festive advert.

As proven with their biggest hits, the Mancunian band have a real knack for pulling on your heart strings with their triumphantly uplifting sound. This cover of a Beatles classic is no different. Perfect for seeing in those chilly, wintry nights, this beautiful track will warm even the frostiest of souls.

Likely to hear on: Radio 6 Music, Magic

N.E.R.D ft. Rihanna - Lemon

Everyone’s favourite hat-wearing hit-maker is back, but this time he’s brought some old friends along for the ride. Cult hip-hop troupe N.E.R.D, fronted by Pharrell Williams, have returned to the scene after a seven-year absence with an up-tempo party anthem destined to take over the radio waves.

As if the comeback wasn’t exciting enough, Rihanna joins the action half-way through – confidently showing off her flawless skills as a rapper over the track’s supremely produced beat.

Likely to hear on: Radio 1Xtra, Capital XTRA

Franz Ferdinand - Always Ascending

Scotland’s finest, Franz Ferdinand, have spent the last 14 years consistently releasing indie banger after banger. But now, in a real departure of style, they want to transport you to a 1970s dancefloor with a disco-infused sound.

Although elements of their trademark style remain, the track is underpinned with newly-acquired strobing synths, while Alex Kapranos’ exuberant vocal is layered with glorious harmonies. If this experimental foray is a sign of things to come, then we cannot wait to get our dancing shoes on when the band release their fifth LP early next year.

Likely to hear on: Radio 6 Music, Absolute, Virgin

Sigrid - Strangers

Norwegian starlet Sigrid first graced our ears with hit of the summer, Don’t Kill My Vibe, and now it seems she’s back to dominate our winter listening too. A taster of the 21-year-old’s forthcoming debut album, Strangers is a lavish serving of fist-pumping pop.

Although the track’s pulsating beat and infectious chorus suggest otherwise, its subject matter deals with the heartache of a failed relationship. As described perfectly by the singer herself, this one will make you “wanna cry and dance at the same time.”

Likely to hear on: Kiss, Heart, Radio 1
