Must Listen 2019: The best new music this July

It’s now well and truly summer and we’ve got a raft of brand-new tracks for you to enjoy this month. Can it get much than this?! Well, yes it can – because we’ve also packed them together into a summer-ready playlist on Spotify. That’s your holiday listening sorted.

Sam Fender - Will We Talk?

As one of Britain’s biggest breakthrough success stories of 2019, Sam Fender has made huge waves with his instantly recognisable brand of soul-baring stadium rock. A bit like North Shields’ answer to the legendary Bruce Springsteen, Fender uses his platform to weave engaging tales around topics like politics, mortality and love.

Continuing this formula on brand-new single, Will We Talk?, the singer-songwriter turns his attention to matters of heartbreak. The track’s euphoric sound, which again nods it head to Springsteen’s fist-pumping Americana, sees Fender’s powerful voice play out over thumping guitars and rousing synth melodies. It’s a timely taster of the star’s September debut album – and we can’t wait to hear more.

Ed Sheeran ft. Bruno Mars & Chris Stapleton - BLOW

On his latest venture, No.6 Collaborations Project (out 12 July), Ed Sheeran is teaming up with a crop of huge superstars from the world of music – including Justin Bieber, Stormzy and Camila Cabello. The ideal platform for the British singer-songwriter to flex his creative muscles, this unlikely team-up sees Sheeran channel his inner rock god.

Lining up alongside Bruno Mars and country star Chris Stapleton, the tune kicks things off with a monstrous riff – which is already a far cry from Sheeran’s usual sound. Things get even crazier when Mars and Stapleton deliver back-to-back verses, before an epic guitar solo shreds its way through till the end of the track and its final singalong chorus. While it may not signal a full-time change in direction for Sheeran and co, it’s a whole lot of fun to listen to.

H.E.R. ft. YBN Cordae - Racks

There’s something about a smooth R&B jam that just screams out summer. Grammy-winning Californian musician H.E.R. knows this too well, dropping a lush new hit just in time for you to pack your bags for somewhere sunny.

Racks is all about everyone’s favourite past time: making money. A thing the singer-songwriter will have certainly gotten used to after a breakthrough year in 2018. But what really impresses is the singer’s fine vocal talent, which takes prominence over a lo-fi, bass-heavy beat.

Bonobo - Linked

Simon Green, better know as Bonobo, is a cult figure in the UK’s booming electronic music scene. With six studio albums under his belt, the musician/producer/DJ has sonically explored all corners of the globe with a world music approach that touches upon trip-hop, nu-jazz, ambient and more.

Linked, his latest single, is a sprawling body of work that teems with glitchy synths – gradually building layer upon layer of sonic texture. As the track reaches its crescendo, it has an almost orchestral feel which is only rewarded further with every repeat listen.

Mahalia ft. Burna Boy - Simmer

Mahalia is a name you need to look out for this year. After featuring prominently in a host of breakthrough roundups at the beginning of 2019, this Midlands singer-songwriter is now busy gearing up for the launch of her debut album in September.

On appropriately titled new single, Simmer, she teams up with Nigerian singer Burna Boy to create a scorching summer anthem – fusing a modern R&B style with sun-soaked dancehall roots. Dropping perfectly in time for vacation season, this track is definitely one to top your poolside playlist. Mahalia. Remember the name.
