PureList: New Year, New.....

by

The year is 2020. It’s a line that may sound like the cliched intro to sci-fi films in decades gone by, with cities full of hoverboards and life-like robots, but a time that once seemed like a far-fetched glimpse into the future is now a reality.

While we’re not quite at the stage to make the commute into work in our flying cars or send a clone of ourselves out to do errands, the dawning of 2020 is the perfect time for new beginnings – as we welcome in a new year and a new decade.

To help soundtrack the start of this landmark year, we’ve created the perfect playlist – with every track or artist referencing the word ‘new’ and offering some musical inspiration to help you see in the new decade in the best way possible.

Here’s a pick of the songs, followed by the full Spotify playlist. Happy listening!

Dua Lipa - New Rules

It’s always a clever idea to set yourself some New Year’s resolutions – creating the perfect framework for living your best life over the coming 12 months. Dua Lipa certainly knows the score, with her global smash hit New Rules offering a failproof guide to shutting a toxic ex out of your life, no matter how hard they try worm their way back in. The fact it’s such a banger makes Dua’s golden commandments extra memorable!

New Order - Blue Monday

The title of New Order’s biggest and most iconic hit is also the name given to a day in January claimed to be the most depressing day of the year – typically the third Monday of the month. Thankfully, the Mancunian veterans’ inspiration for the track came from somewhere different altogether, so this giant 80s dance track, featuring a punchy drum track and otherworldly bassline, is ironically the perfect antidote to even the bluest of Mondays.

Paolo Nutini - New Shoes

As Scottish troubadour Paolo Nutini once pointed out in his joyous single, sometimes the smallest changes in your life can make the biggest difference. All it took for Paolo was a fresh new pair of kicks to put a spring in his step. While material goods may not do it for everyone, the same mantra could easily be applied by taking up a new hobby or adopting healthier lifestyle choices.

Tame Impala - New Person, Same Old Mistakes

This psychedelic infused ballad from Aussie rockers Tame Impala, also covered by Rihanna on her Anti album, can serve as an important lesson to us all. “Feel like a brand new person, but you'll make the same old mistakes,” rings out as the chorus’ powerful opening line, teaching us two important things. Firstly, it’s important not to fall into a trap of making the same mistakes time after time. But most important of all, it’s okay to make mistakes. After all, it’s what builds us as people.

New Radicals - You Get What You Give

LA group New Radicals had an international hit on their hands in the late 90s with this feel-good gem, which landed high charting spots in several continents. Packed full of positive, inspirational lyrics, the song’s overarching message is the perfect one to carry into 2020. You get what you give, so treat others how you’d want to be treated. It’s that simple, but it can make one hell of a difference.
