Digital radio arrives in France

Eiffel tower, Paris. FranceAfter several years of testing in the cities of Lyon, Marseille and Nantes, France is now looking forward to the launch of digital radio in three cities and their surrounding areas: Paris, Marseille and Nice.

Le Conseil supérieur de l’audiovisuel (CSA) announced that radio stations will start broadcasting on the digital radio platform in these areas from 20th June, 2014. Testing will continue in Lyon and Nantes and the CSA will be publishing further details of the digital radio roll out.

Laura Klauck-de-Branche, Pure’s country manager for France & BeNeLux said, “Pure has been in the French market since 2009 and has supported the digital radio roll out in France from the outset. Pure was also the first brand available in France to supply products which support both the DAB+ and DMB standards chosen for the territory. We’ve supported all the tests in Lyon, Nantes and Marseille with investment, marketing, events and product training and are now fully supporting the official launches in Paris, Marseille, and Nice.”

Pure Evoke D4 with BluetoothAccording to Audiencenet (2013), radio is still very popular in France with 77% of the French tuning in almost every day. The radio is the preferred device when consuming radio (30% of users) and is far ahead of the computer (18%), stereo (16%) and mobile phone or smartphone (9%).

The digital radio launch will give radio listeners in France better reception with interference-free, crystal clear sound quality. Users in Lyon and Nantes are already benefitting from national digital radio stations such as Radio Nova, YES FM, Radio FG, Latina FM and RFI with those living in Marseille, Paris and Nice soon being able to enjoy a wider choice of stations with the ability to search easily for their favourite content. Scrolling text on the screens of digital radio will also provide additional information such as the name of a song and an artist or sports results.

Laura’s favourite digital radio stations in France that users should look out for are Crooner, Raje, Radio Nova, Radio FG and Qui FM.
