Must Listen 2019: The best new music this December

by

See out the end of 2019 in style with our round-up of the month’s very best new music. With a true feast of genres on offer, you’ll have plenty of tunes to sink your teeth into this December. We’ve even gift-wrapped a Spotify playlist of 30 new tracks, so the great music doesn’t have to stop!

Stormzy ft. Ed Sheeran & Burna Boy - Own It

With mount Glastonbury well and truly conquered over the summer with an era-defining performance atop the iconic festival’s bill, UK rap superstar Stormzy now has another summit to reach. This month, the Londoner releases his hugely anticipated second album, Heavy Is The Head, with many fans hoping he can keep up the prolific form that has seen him headline festivals and sell out arena tours.

Own It is a promising taste of things to come, with the grime star showcasing a polished, R&B-flavoured sound that will no doubt have a far-reaching global appeal. It also doesn’t hurt that he’s roped in two huge mates to help him out, with African up-and-comer Burna Boy and Brit icon Ed Sheeran delivering masterful guest verses – adding an extra dimension to proceedings. Our only issue is that it’s arrived about six months too late, because it would have been the ultimate jam for the summer!

Taylor Swift - Christmas Tree Farm

Well, we couldn’t have done a December round-up with at least one Christmas song, could we?! This festive cracker comes courtesy of the one and only Taylor Swift, who this year enjoyed a huge return to form with her fantastic album, Lover.

As the old saying goes, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, and we’re pleased to report that Christmas Tree Farm has all the bells and whistles you’d expect from a classic seasonal hit. Jingle bells? Check! Backing choir? Check! Key change? Check! It may be as sugary as a tree full of candy canes, but it’s exactly what’s needed at this time of year. Cheers, Swifty, that’s going straight on our Christmas playlist.

Gerry Cinnamon - The Bonny

What Gerry Cinnamon has achieved in past couple of years has been nothing short of phenomenal. An unsigned singer-songwriter with little radio play to his name, the Scotsman enjoyed a stratospheric rise to fame thanks to word-of-mouth and social media buzz around his raucous live shows. Now, with a huge sold-out gig at Hampden Park stadium and album two on the horizon, the prolific solo act has treated us with a new single.

One of the slower numbers in Cinnamon’s arsenal, The Bonny has a folksy feel to it – with melancholic finger-plucked guitar strings and rousing harmonica solos. It’s biggest draw however, and the reason why he’s garnered such a cult-like following, is the emotional delivery, with Gerry belting out heart-on-his-sleeve lyrics in his trademark Glaswegian drawl. And you can guarantee that fans will be singing them back word-for-word at every single one of his electric live gigs.

The Weeknd - Blinding Lights

At this time of year, people tend to look ahead to another year and pastures new. But not The Weeknd. No, in fact, he’s stepped back all the way to the 1980s to discover inspiration for his latest sound….and we are loving it!

Equipped with a backing beat that wouldn’t sound out of place on an 8-bit arcade games machine, the track’s breakneck pace creates an interesting contrast against the singer’s recognisably smooth, soulful vocal. While fans of The Weeknd may be taken by surprise, it’s a switch-up in style that works surprisingly well, and proof that sometimes olden is golden.

Jon Hopkins & Kelly Lee Owens - Luminous Spaces

The Christmas period isn’t just a time for generosity, family and great food. It’s also a great time to party. With arguably the biggest night out of the year, New Year’s Eve, on the horizon, this track is perfect for electronic music fans who will see in 2020 clubbing till the early hours of the morning.

With esteemed British producer Jon Hopkins at the helm, the track builds slowly with hushed, fidgeting beats, before being complemented by Kelly Lee Owens’ ethereal vocals. But just as you’re being lulled into this calming combination, the tune explodes to life and ups the BPM with thumping beats and restless synths. Ace.
