Must Listen 2018: The best new music this December

It’s December – and our Christmas gift to you comes in the form of 30 new tracks ready-made to soundtrack your month. Expect hot hits from the likes of Mark Ronson, Coldplay, Jessie J and more!

Mark Ronson ft. Miley Cyrus - Nothing Breaks Like a Heart

When you’re the man behind a platinum-selling, award-winning, world-dominating hit like Uptown Funk, it’s always going to be a tough act to follow. But with the help of pop princess Miley Cyrus, hit producer Mark Ronson could be onto yet another winner.

Nothing Breaks Like a Heart nods its head to the singer’s Nashville roots, as twanging country guitars meld with emotive strings and a stomping drum beat. Entrenched in heartbreak, the track labelled a “sad banger” by Ronson himself, is all the more poignant after Cyrus’ home was destroyed in last month’s devastating California wildfires.

Los Unidades & Pharrell Williams ft. Jozzy - E-Lo

After a quick listen to E-Lo, you may have a funny feeling that Los Unidades sound familiar. But there’s no need to double take, as those suspicions are correct; it’s in fact the boys from Coldplay performing under a secret guise for a very special cause.

The lead single of a four-track EP in aid of the Global Citizen charity, E-Lo has the hallmarks of Coldplay’s latest work – with Chris Martin’s soulful warble playing over a triumphant, dance-inducing track. To make the song that bit more special, the band are joined on vocal duties by none other than Pharrell.

Jessie J - This Christmas Day

Well, we couldn’t have a December round-up without featuring at least one Christmas single. This effort from pop superstar Jessie J is part of a special 11-track holidays album – comprising of iconic covers and this one original track.

This Christmas Day is a mellowed-out R&B tune that recreates the fuzzy feeling of waking up on a cosy festive morning. Backed by a soulful gospel choir and a warming string section, the song’s message of celebrating lost loved ones perfectly encapsulates the holiday spirit.

Anderson Paak - Who R U?

Thanks to the help of legendary mentor, Dr Dre, on production duties, Anderson Paak is responsible for possibly the best hip-hop album of the year with the release of Oxnard. Despite being packed with all-star collaborations, the Californian musician shines brightest when he’s star of the show.

Who R U? is a prime example of this, with Paak delivering assured verses over a percussive, West Coast beat. “I never want it to ever be over,” exclaims the rapper with a huge sense of pride, as he charts his early rise to fame to now working alongside his childhood idol, Dr Dre.

Circa Waves - Movies

Liverpool’s finest foursome since The Beatles are back on the scene with a first taste of their upcoming third album, What's It Like Over There? After building up a reputation as one of the nation’s most raucous indie bands, Movies offers a glimpse at a real sonic departure for Circa Waves.

Whilst maintaining the upbeat nature of their previous material, the single adds a refined layer of polish to what’s easily the closest thing to pop they’ve ever recorded. Layered with duelling guitars, falsetto backing vocals and an electronic drum track, it’s an infectious slice of fun that reveals the band’s adventurous musical vision going forward.
