Rejoice, for it’s April! Spring has officially sprung, the days are getting warmer and Easter gives us the perfect excuse to feast on copious amounts of chocolate. Result! To accompany you through the month, here are the five biggest new tracks you need to hear.
Kasabian - You’re In Love With A Psycho
The lads from Leicester are back with a taster from their sixth album, For Crying Out Loud – and boy are we happy to have them back! This kooky effort sees the band ditch their heavier, aggressive sound in favour of a poppy tune brimming with character.
While their approach may be more delicate than usual, it’s as catchy as you’d expect from indie heroes Kasabian. There’s also plenty of time to memorise the lyrics word for word before what’s destined to be a pair of monumental headline performances at Reading & Leeds Festival in August.
Likely to hear on: Radio X, Absolute.
Clean Bandit ft. Zara Larsson – Symphony
Clean Bandit’s steady ascent to pop domination continues with this massive ballad which boasts the flawless vocals of Swedish teenage sensation Zara Larsson (who also features in our blog of the Euro music stars you need to know). The trio’s brand of euphoric pop married with one of the hottest voices in pop music was always destined to be a success on paper, but this track exceeds all expectations – which builds slowly to a euphoric final chorus.
Rapidly establishing themselves as the most dependable hit-makers in the biz, this tune completes a hat-trick of bangers following singles Rockabye and Tears. Now, we await news of album number two with bated breath.
Likely to hear on: Capital, Kiss, Radio 1.
Jamiroquai - Cloud 9
After spending the last seven years in pop wilderness, Jamiroquai have returned with new album Automaton – and they’re hoping for a musical resurrection of Craig David-sized proportions. So far, they’re on track – with a sold out European tour in the pipeline and a slew of rave reviews for their latest LP.
Album highlight Cloud 9 is an emphatic return to form, which sees funk-loving frontman Kay croons over a slick, disco-infused backing track. Keep this tune on file for a hot summer’s day and enjoy responsibly.
Likely to hear on: Mi-Soul, Heart, Radio 2.
Tom Misch ft. Novelist - Feeling
If you don’t know him already, then now’s the time to get to know Tom Misch; the uber talented 21-year-old songwriter/multi-instrumentalist/producer with a penchant for genre-hopping. Keen to push himself as a collaborator, he recently embarked on a project entitled 5 Day Mischon. Recorded in five days, with one track per day, the project features a different artist on each song. The final result is a triumph.
Our favourite from the EP features grime rapper Novelist on a smoothly produced love song that explores the spiritual aspect of a caring relationship. As soothing as rap gets, this is the musical equivalent of a cup of camomile tea. Tom Misch: remember the name!
Likely to hear on: Radio 1Xtra.
Gorillaz ft. Popcaan - Saturn Barz
Gorillaz – Damon Albarn’s genre-bending, superstar collaborating, virtual band – aren’t exactly ones to follow conventions. So, when the cartoon group finally decided to unveil new material after a six year hiatus, they shocked the music world by flash releasing four huge tracks at once. This, the pick of the bunch, features the vocal talents of Jamaican newcomer Popcaan and takes the 2D troupe down new sonic paths as they cleverly fuse together genres like reggae, dancehall and electronica.
While this aperitif of new tracks is certainly to our taste, we’re now hungry for the main course to arrive in the form of fifth studio album, Humanz. And as you’d expect, it’s a star-studded affair, featuring Grace Jones, Noel Gallagher, Rag’n’Bone Man and many more.
Likely to hear on: Radio 1, Radio 6 Music.
