5 #MustListen tracks for May

by

Gosh, this year is going fast. It’s already May and we’re only a whisker away from the start of summer – which is certainly a cause for celebration! To get you through what will hopefully be a month filled with sunshine, here are the five biggest new tunes you need to check out.

Harry Styles - Sweet Creature

The solo venture that every One Direction fan was really waiting for is finally here. After dominating the airwaves with first single, Sign of the Times, the impeccably coiffed Harry Styles has now revealed a second cut from his debut album.

A swaying folk ballad which flaunts the singer’s vocal range to a tee, Sweet Creature confirms a brave new direction for the former boy bander. His move away from 1D’s sugary sound may turn the heads of those who dismissed the 23-year-old as merely a product of manufactured pop music.

Likely to hear on: Radio 1, Capital

Phoenix - J-Boy

French indie outfit, Phoenix, have announced their long-awaited return after a four-year absence with the June release of album, Ti Amo. The record’s first taster, J-Boy, is a punchy dose of electro-pop which sees the group experiment with synths and even auto-tune in true Kanye fashion. Describing the album as an “incredibly colourful” body of work inspired by “summer and Italian discos,” it’s certain to be on repeat over the feel-good midsummer months.

Lana Del Rey feat. The Weeknd - Lust for Life

Pop’s most enigmatic siren, Lana Del Rey, has only gone and enlisted the hottest property in R&B for her latest single in what will surely be one of the biggest collaborations of 2017. And, as expected, it works a treat. Melding her trademark ethereal sound with The Weeknd’s smooth falsetto into one sultry marriage of styles, the track bubbles along slowly while boasting sleek, delicate production.

As the superstar duo coo, “we're the masters of our own fate, we're the captains of our own souls,” you get the feeling this is a tune destined for seductive perfume commercials.

Likely to hear on: Capital, Radio1, Kiss

The Amazons - Junk Food Forever

Here’s a band we’ve tipped as one of our Rising Stars of 2017 – and you can clearly see why in just under four minutes of anthemic indie rock. A four-piece with a penchant for tunes laden with ear-worming hooks and riffs, it won’t take long before you’re belting out frontman, Matt Thomson’s lyrics word for word. While some critics say guitar music is a dying brand, The Amazons are here to buck that trend and proudly bear the flag for the genre.

Likely to hear on: Radio X, Virgin

Steps - Scared of the Dark

You’d be completely forgiven for double taking upon reading the name ‘Steps’, but the five-piece pop troupe are back and they’re hell-bent on reliving those nineties glory days. The ultimate throwback to every pre-Millennium wedding disco, Scared of the Dark is a bombastic floor-filler, which sounds like a ready-made Eurovision anthem – in a good way!

It’s even got the critics talking, which just goes to show that everyone loves a guilty pleasure. So throw away your inhibitions, pump up the volume and party like it’s 1999 all over again.
